Our Story

I coined the term Gypset (gypsy + jet set) to describe an international group of artists, entrepreneurs, surfers, seekers, and bon vivants– who lead semi-nomadic, unconventional lives. They are people I’ve met–or been inspired by– in my travels from Mongolia to Morocco who have perfected a creative approach to life that fuses the freelance and nomadic ways of the mythologic gypsy with the adventurous freedom of the jet set. It’s an alternative way of traveling, living, and thinking that’s based more on creativity than cash. It’s about questioning materialism and exploring spirituality and experimenting. In the world proposed by Gypset aspirations and hierarchy have been rearranged. We are not impressed by the most expensive; instead we prize a style that’s original, idiosyncratic, and based on post-conventional ideals. I have published several books on the topic Gypset Style (2009), Gypset Travel (2012) Gypset Living (2014) Tulum Gypset (2019) and the Boho Manifesto (2019.) Gypset also operates as a brand that creates capsule clothing collections, design and event collaborations, hospitality consulting, and travel experiences. Gypset has grown into a full-fledged zeitgeist movement that is synonymous with festival culture, wellness, travel, sustainability, and bohemian style. And I’m happy to report that the further we travel on this arduous and ardent journey the further we get from it  ending. Enjoy!

About Julia Chaplin

I am a journalist, author, designer, and consultant. My background is in journalism (The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Travel & Leisure, ELLE, Vogue) covering contemporary art, design, travel, lifestyle and fashion. I’ve written five books and operate gypset.com amongst other projects (see Work With Us section). As a concept Gypset continues to expand and be a very personal pursuit for me, fusing my bohemian upbringing with the fast paced world I began inhabiting as an adult and the changing world around me. I’m pragmatic about pragmatic things (like finding and booking cool hotel rooms) but I’m also a daydreamer and I do strongly believe in the fusion of fantasy and reality.
